I need help!

I need some help people!!! You know how I have been telling you that I am dying to paint my Kitchen cabinets? Well it has been driving me mad, I just want to paint them and be done. However my husband thinks we should have them sanded first and then paint. So I need to hear as much of your input as possible! Because the thought of sanding our cabinets seems impossible and I don't think we can afford to pay someone to do it. So what say you?

One time I attempted to paint my own cabinets and by the fourth one I was ready to shoot myself. Save your money and hire it out!

I say sand them, although they do make some good deglossers. But they are your kitchen cabinets and take so much everyday wear. You want to it right. =)

I say send 'em...but it is that thought that has kept me from painting our kitchen cabinets. I want so badly to get rid of the natural wood finish, but I'm not sure I want to take on the project myself..especially with the sanding, and almost everything I've read says you need to sand the cabinets before paint.

Let me know what you decide. I hope you find a miracle paint stripping chemical that will do most of the work for you! And when you find it...I'll use the same thing ;)

Sorry to tell you this but they should be sanded, especially since they'll take a lot of wear & tear. Save your money, and get it done professionally!

Definitely sand them. Don't take any chances. I've never painted cabinets, but my husband restored a few old pieces of furniture for me and the first time around, he didn't sand and ended up re-doing it the right way, first sanding them.
Take the extra time and they will look amazing!
Good luck & looking forward to seeing the results!

Sand! Sand! Sand!

I just redid my kitchen cabinets with my Mom who is a professional cabinet refinisher. If you are interested in a step by step check out my blog. Not sanding and cleaning properly will result in paint that will chip and peel...not a good look.

I can't wait to read all of the feedback you get since I've been dying to paint my kitchen (and bathroom) cabinets too but I'm so afraid the paint won't stick or will begin to chip overtime.

Oh, I'm also afraid I'll wimp out after 2 cabinets and have a weird looking kitchen haha

Nope, nope, nope. No sanding required. Well not a ton anyway. I just did my own, and yes it's a LONG job, but the result is fabulous. It's meticulous but SO worth it. My cabinets were painted before, so I had to sand uneven spots (drips, etc). Otherwise, no sanding!

My blog post about doing it is here: http://tinyurl.com/2df82oj

And the instructions I found from Sunset Magazine are here: http://tinyurl.com/28xrleb

The TSP solution they talk about is about $5 at Home Depot in the paint department. Just be sure to wear gloves :)

Lovely,
This advice is coming straight from my husband who is qualified cabinet maker/ Builder...You will need to sand them even just lightly so that the paint can stick to the wood, if they are highly lacquered..then a heavier sanding will need to be done. Without sanding could affect the result of your paint finish, and may flake, bubble or peel with humidity or heat..especially in a kitchen area.
Then after sanding, a primer...then top coat (ie: your chosen paint colour)

You can use a spray gun to paint them
( can buy or hire these ) but an undecoat needs to be done before spray painting.

All doors can be removed and lined up and spray painted in one go.

This really needs to be done in order to get the best results and finish..it will be worth all the effort.

Hope this info helps sweety x

This sounds like a perfect Christmas present for you! I have sanded and painted furniture enough over the past few years...that I send it out to be done professionally now..the time that I save is so worth it...and I feel a professional does it much better than me! Look around...there may be some out there who will do it at a great price! Take care, Caroline

I repainted my cabinets once and I just sanded them a tiny bit and then gave up because it was so hard. I used some kind of primer and rubbed that all over them. Then I used oil based paint and it was incredible - and worked perfectly. Our cabinets weren't painted before but were old like from the 70's :) I doubt you really need to sand them..

You really need to sand them. But don't worry, you can do it! Just get a good sander for about $50 from home depot. You don't need to sand them all the way to the wood or anything. Just sand enough for the paint to get a grit on the cabinet. YOU CAN DO IT!

I was really interested to read all these comments because, even though I have no idea whether to sand or not, I have been wanting to do this to my kitchen cupboards too. I think the verdict for me, after reading all of these, is getting them professionally done...unfortunately :(

I'm sorry to say no matter how much someone says you don't need to sand them- YOU DO! It will give you the best result! It really isn't that difficult or time consuming. I wouldn't hire someone. Just start off slow. Take all the uppers off and sand them one weekend. Tape plastic inside the cabinet so you don't even have to remove the contents. Sand the uppers attached to the walls one week night. Next weekend paint all the uppers. Following weekend start over with the base and repeat. In a couple weeks time (without killing yourself) you'll have a brand new kitchen for the cost of a sander and paint!!! Trust me- i've repainted 4 kitchens ;)

I am actually about to do a post on how NOT to just paint your cabinets. I did this, and now I have spent months scrapping the paint off of them, sanding, priming and painting, then sanding, painting, etc. I wish I had done it the correct way to begin with, it would have saved me a lot of time and frustration, not to mention unsightly cabinets until then.

Definitely sand them. If you definitely want a look that is all your own, then there's no point in cutting corners. The sanding will give the cabinets a smooth, glossy finish.

What about replacing the doors with new ones that you can find in stock at Home Depot or Lowes, then just sand and paint the cabinet bases? Carol Lewis

i say go for it.... haha :)paint away. you'll be happier.. sooner :)

It depends on the type of finish that exists on your cabinets currently. Do they have a clear lacquer over the wood, or is it just raw wood? If you are going to do, it pays to take the time and do it the right way. (I can say this by experience!)GOOD LUCK HONEY! They will look gorgeous in the end!!

I say prime with a great primer and no sanding is required! It is a lot of work to paint your kitchen cabinets (we did it!), but it's SO WORTH IT!

Jackie said...

I would say definitely prime first. If you are going to do them yourself, you better do it right! I've been wanting to tackle the kitchen cabinets for awhile now too, but after just painting my new desk I am so over the idea! I hated every minute of it.

1. Citristrip is absolutely genius for currently painted or varnished pieces (and non-toxic for the little one's nose), use it twice if the cabinets are older or have layers of old paint on them. Then clean up with Mineral spirits. (let the stripping agent do your bitch work)
2. Once that is done- the sanding is pretty light- just to smooth them out for paint plus its not so hard on your time, or your body.
3. the money you spend on these few materials will save you SO MUCH MONEY from having others!!!
4. Its all about a little patience and it'll be so worth it!

All in all, I say save where you can.

I'm with Olivia. I have never painted kitchen cupboard, but I painted our walls a couple of months for the first time. I read a little bit about the proper way to paint the wall, but I went for no prime, no sanding. I would NEVER paint my wall if I have to do other process other than painting. It's hard enough! I like the end result. Although concrete walls are no cupboards. I would try painting of one cupboard (one small one that you don't see much) without sanding and if you don't like the end result or think that you need to sand, maybe you can decide then. I'm like you and seeing your kitchen, it looks like a lot of work... :) I hope you'll end up with the happy decision whether you sand or not. I'm sorry for such a long comment!
